Pipe Delivery for the Wilhelmshaven Connection Pipeline

By the end of 2022, the Wilhelmshaven connection pipeline (WAL for short), which is just under 30 kilometers long, will be completed and operational for the LNG terminal. Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, Salzgitter Mannesmann Großrohr GmbH, and Salzgitter Mannesmann Grobblech GmbH are already working closely together to implement this forward-looking and sustainable project.

This concept creates direct import opportunities in Germany and, according to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs, must be implemented as a top priority. Construction requires swift and focused cooperation between the private sector, policymakers, government agencies, and the transmission system operator, Open Grid Europe GmbH (OGE). The WAL is of great national interest, as it will connect a new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal to the NETRA transmission pipeline near the gas storage facility in Etzel, thereby enabling the transport of up to 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas—initially—from the North Sea coast to the south and east of the country.

The goal is to become independent of Russian natural gas as quickly as possible. In line with the German energy sector’s new focus on expanding renewable energy, the pipelines are being manufactured by Mannesmann Großrohr GmbH with a forward-looking approach to ensure they can also transport hydrogen if needed.

Steel and coils for the pipeline's pipe production are supplied by Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH.

This fundamental component of future supply security for all of Germany is of great importance to the Salzgitter Group. All pipes required for the production of the bends have already been manufactured and delivered to the pipe bending plant.
