Explosion clad bends

Pipe Bending Plant qualified for the production of explosion clad bends

We have qualified the production route for the fabrication of 24” clad bend from heavy wall SAWL pipe in material grade X65 together with our partners „NobelClad“ and „Eisenbau Krämer (EBK)“.
The investigation was accompanied by our Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung research centre.

The plate, showing a typical lean chemistry for line pipe product, was produced by thermo-mechanical rolling, followed by accelerated cooling (TMCP). It had a heavy wall of 39 mm as is often used in deepwater projects. The plate material was explosion welded at NobelClad, Germany, using a CRA 4 mm thick plate of Alloy 625. At EBK the clad plate was formed to a 24” pipe applying the JCO process and welded with multi layer welding technique.

Subsequently a 3D bend was produced by induction bending on our bending machine and heat treated by full body quenching and tempering.Mechanical technological testing was carried out at Salzgitter Mannesmann Forschung GmbH strength, toughness, hardness, shear and corrosion properties were investigated and compared for each single production step.

Explosion cladding presents a variety of material combinations even for small lots, as typically needed for pre-material for bending. Excellent strength and toughness properties of TMCP pipes could be perfectly combined with optimized corrosion properties of the internal cladding.
